Book excerpt: Publishers are removing things from new Bibles! Publishers of modern Bible versions have been removing words, phrases, and even whole verses, but their readers are often unaware of it. Few people know the Bible well enough to notice when something has been taken out. But the results are hard to believe. The removal of one tiny word turns Jesus into a liar. Callers into Christian talk shows have even used this to say that it’s okay for a Christian to lie. After all, they say, Jesus did it. A verse that’s completely missing from some of the most popular Bibles available today completely removes one of the basic doctrines found in every evangelical church. When David Daniels shows this one to people they just stand with their mouths open and say, “I can’t believe it!” In another case, Jesus’ own words are removed, taking out a famous phrase in which Jesus explains why He came to earth. People react with: “They took out Jesus words! How can they do that?” This information has been right under our noses for years, but no one has ever taken the time to cull through this many Bible versions and find the missing parts. Author David Daniels did the research and now releases his results for the Christian world to see what is really missing. How about your Bible? Is it on the list of Bibles with pieces taken out? You might be surprised when you look at what’s missing.

Book The Christian Writer s Manual of Style

Download or read The Christian Writer s Manual of Style PDF, written by Robert Hudson and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard style guide of the Christian publishing industry, The Christian Writer’s Manual of Style, 4th Edition, compiled by veteran Zondervan editor Robert Hudson, contains clear guidance on style questions related to religious writing, including many topics not addressed in other references or online. Nearly half of this fourth revision is made up of new material, including information about turning blogs into books, the effects of digital media on writing, “adverbial doubles,” “vanishing accents,” word-choice strategies, endorser guidelines, and much more. It also contains an all-new “Word List” which makes up more than a third of the book. The most needful information remains—entries on capitalization, abbreviation, citations, fictional dialogue, and more—but it has all been updated to keep pace with changes in English language usage. This fourth edition also corresponds with The Chicago Manual of Style, 16th Edition (2010), though it isn’t afraid to chart new territory where that reference is unhelpful on issues of religious writing. Comprehensive yet easy-to-use, The Christian Writer’s Manual of Style, 4th Edition, is a go-to resource for Christian authors, pastors, teachers, copy writers, editors, proofreaders, publishing and ministry professionals, executive assistants, and students—anyone who writes or edits as a part of their work or study—and for grammar aficionados everywhere.

Book The Bible at Cultural Crossroads

Download or read The Bible at Cultural Crossroads PDF, written by Harriet Hill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bible translators have focused their efforts on preparing a text that is clear, natural and accurate, with the expectation that audiences will understand the message if it is in their language. Field research among the Adioukrou of Côte d'Ivoire shows that audiences also need to have access to the contextual information the author expected his audience to bring to the text. When such information is provided, both understanding of and interest in the message increase dramatically. These findings support Relevance Theory's claim that meaning is inferred from the interaction of text and context. To the extent that the contextual knowledge evoked by the text for contemporary audiences differs from that evoked for the first audience, understanding is impaired. The Bible at Cultural Crossroads presents a model to assist translators in identifying contextual mismatches and applies it on the thematic level to mismatches between first-century Jewish and Adioukrou views of the unseen world, and on the passage level to contextual mismatches arising from four Gospel passages. In-text and out-of-text solutions for adjusting contextual mismatches are explored, with field research results showing the effectiveness of various solutions. Context is shown to be both a significant factor in communication and a dynamic one. Translations of the text alone are not sufficient for successful communication.

Book excerpt: Although most Christian women wear several hats covering many responsibilities, many have little time to fulfill their desire to be of service to the Lord and others. Have you ever wished that you could do more than you are doing right now for the Lord? Have you ever thought about serving in your church community but nothing seems to fit your time frame or abilities? Whether you are a wife, mother, partner to your spouse, sole breadwinner, or even a career woman, most Christian women have a heart for serving the Lord. However, women often do not know where to start even though they may have a deep longing to serve God and others or to bring Christ's message to those who don't know him. This book will show women the importance of and the ease of engaging in Active Relational Christian Mentoring (ARCM). Through true mentoring stories, the author also explains and demonstrates the importance of Christ being at the center of all mentoring relationships. Having Christ at the center of the braided three-strand cord of mentoring means positive, meaningful, and loving help is there for both the mentor and mentee. The three-strand cord of ARCM also provides a caring and efficient way for Christian women to support, encourage, enlighten, and empower other women through the development of godly mentoring relationships. It is through their personal relationships that women are given the opportunity to shine the light of Christ on others. You can do it! You can mentor another woman for the Lord!
