Download or read Prudentius Psychomachia PDF, written by Marc Mastrangelo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-28 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new translation brings to life Prudentius' Psychomachia, one of the most widely read poems in western Europe from Late Antiquity through the Renaissance. With accompanying notes and introduction, this volume provides a fresh exploration of its themes and influence. The Psychomachia of Prudentius (348–c. 405), an allegorical epic poem of nearly 1,000 lines about the battle between the virtues and the vices for possession of the human soul, led early modern scholars to refer to the late antique poet as "the Christian Vergil." Combining depictions of violent, single combats with allusions to pagan epic poetry, biblical scenes, and Christian doctrine, the poem captures the dynamism of the later Roman Empire in which the pagan world was giving way to a new, Christian Europe. In this volume, the introduction sets the historical and literary context and illuminates the Psychomachia’s prominent role in western literary history. Mastrangelo’s translation aims to capture the rhetorical power of the author’s Roman Christian Latin for the 21st-century reader. The notes provide the reader with in-depth information on Prudentius’ Latinity, the Roman epic tradition, and Christian doctrine. This volume is directed at students and scholars across the disciplines of comparative literature, classics, religion, and ancient and medieval studies, as well as any reader interested in the history and development of literature in the West.
Download or read Mythology for the Microcosm PDF, written by A. Brian Lasater and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2005-12 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About my book: Although there is nothing new under the sun, it is always useful to reevaluate old ideas and principles and express them in new and original ways. There are many books on the Kabala, but based on what I have seen and read, there is room for a comprehensive approach. Many authors leave out fundamental princi- ples altogether, like the authors who don't even mention the celestial bodies and the Zodiac. On the other hand, scholars of mythology, generally, do not even refer to astrology and the Kabala and, apparently do not recognise that the celestial bodies were the principle gods of the ancient pantheon. My approach has been to briefly discuss some of the fundamental elements of the old theologies and relate them to astrology and the Kabala from a modern perspective. Thus I have laid an essential foundation for the Kabala and astrology, and placed them the context of Greek and Roman mythology. Since I have adopted a broad perspective, the reader has a basis for pursuing these subjects in a variety of ways. I have not seen any other book that relates astrology and the Kabala to Greek and Roman mythology, the Bible, and then relates these to Mesopotamian and Egyptian mythology. The ancient theologies have many fundamental elements in common and these form key parts of the foundation of astrology and the Kabala. In addition, I have given a concise discussion of the Four Alchemical Elements, the Signs of the Zodiac and the Celestial Bodies, and placed them in a Kabalistic framework. To truly comprehend the Kabala and Astrology, it must be remembered that it is one com-plete whole, and it is broken down to make analysis practicable. Therefore I have discussed Creation and the Ten Sephiroth, the trinity in some of its forms as a sacred elements in Creation and in Man and Woman, the Four Elements and the Zodiac. Then from a mythological and theological perspective, I have looked briefly at Mesopotamia and Egyptian. As a counterweight to our cynical age, I have look-ed at the Golden Age of Atlantis, and the mythological heroes and heroines of the primordial past serve as exemplars, and encourage us to strive to attain some of Occidental Civilization's highest ideals. On the other hand, Atlantis is a warn-ing the misuse of knowledge and power leads to the destruction of civilization. Further, from a theological and mythical perspective, the Sephiroth were divine in-struments used in Creation. On a more mundane level, the Kabala and astrology are a means to know ourselves and obey the injunction, "Know Thyself" that used to be inscribed on Apollo's temple at Delphi. This book is based on the work of the ancients, whose writing is superb. The quotes in English, from the ancients, are the best part of the book, and it is a pleasure to read.

Download or read Celtic Astrology from the Druids to the Middle Ages PDF, written by M.G. Boutet and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of Celtic astrology is based mainly on the speculations of modern authors--mostly drawn from classical Greek and Roman writings--and suffers from many misconceptions. European astrology uses the Greek model, containing many Babylonian and Egyptian elements. But Celtic astrology (and other Indo-European astrologies) developed earlier, with relationships to Middle Eastern systems, as well as their own independent forms. This well documented study takes a fresh look at the development of Celtic astrology and the Druids' systems of cosmology, astronomy and astrology. The author analyzes commentaries found in manuscript sources from antiquity to the Middle Ages, comparing them with cosmological and astronomical lore found in Celtic cultures. Ancient constellations, calendars, deities and rituals reveal a rich worldview.

Here, in his ebullient style, he buzzes through piles of musical singles from the whole last half century, describing what is fun about each major and minor hit, pointing out what elements were exciting or new or significant in the development of musical styles. He relates some tantalizing tidbits about the earlier musical heritage that artists have drawn upon in crafting ever more amazing evolutions of rock music. This snappy, witty and informative album has universal appeal, doubling as a coffee-table trivia treasure and a college-level popular music history text. It includes hundreds of photos, chapter questions, and an extensive index. Reader-friendly and informationally complete, it covers soft rock, heavy metal, rhythm & blues, country rock and classic oldies, all with tender loving care, for the specialist and casual listener alike. Its mini-portraits of the artists who move so many hearts (and feet), the photos and the insightful sound bites get to the essence of each song and each musician's contribution to the music of our age. The single-song focus makes the book unique. It's a playlist for R'n'R professors and the general public, written with a collegiate vocabulary, tight organization and a respect for all. "Hearing Elvis for the first time was like busting out of jail." - Bob Dylan That being said, no one is being incited, here, to bust out of jail or to emulate the quixotic habits of rock stars. "There's nothing in here to hide from the kids, the clergy or grandma." Gold Rush can be used as a university or community college text, but most people will grab it for the sheer pleasure of reading about everyone's favorites. Great gift for Rock enthusiasts. Gold Rush is the first book of its kind to feature a celebration of the great single songs of the rock era and beyond. Gold Rush takes thousands of songs, spanning three centuries, and brings them back uniquely as if they came out just yesterday. Gold Rush unites the Anglo-American and later worldwide spirit of Rock and Roll in a tapestry of interconnected melodies and adventures. As Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide helps you select videos at Blockbuster, so Gold Rush is a powerful playlist for your music collection, with many new and fascinating photos of favorite stars. Gold Rush explains the most important stories behind the songs you picked to be played, the songs that 'went gold,' from the 1897 Alaska/Klondike Gold Rush to the #1 songs of today and beyond.
