Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Married to one of Imperial Germany's wealthiest princes, Daisy of Pless nee Cornwallis-West occupied a prominent place in Edwardian Society. The biography of Princess Daisy of Pless becomes a journey of discovery through the life of a woman who was beautiful, intelligent, idealistic, and creative in pursuing her humanitarian and political goals. Daisy of Pless was the friend of King Edward VII and Emperor Wilhelm II. She fought against many adversities for the betterment of life of the poor and the working class and for peace in Europe. In the end, although as a woman and as a member of her class she was ahead of her time, her accomplishments went unrecognized and she was quickly forgotten except by the poor and the working people of Lower Silesia she had helped so effectively. Celebrated as one of the great beauties of Edwardian England and as the glamorous hostess of the international set at Castle Furstenstein in Imperial Germany, Daisy of Pless led a life of remarkable triumphs that ended suddenly with the onset of the Great War.Between 1914 and 1918, condemned to life in enemy country, she served as auxiliary nurse on German and Austrian hospital trains in France and in Serbia. Her last triumph was the publication of her diaries after 1927. Her life ended in a great tragedy of chronic illness, social isolation, and poverty. With this startling biography, the accomplishments of Daisy of Pless may rise from obscurity to a recognized place in history and inspire readers everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘These literary-critical essays are compact with wit and penetration but also have a kind of freshness about them, as if the author has never got over his first rapture of enjoyment at the sheer thisness of poetry and prose. James is in the tradition of Hazlitt, Bagehot, and Desmond MacCarthy, with a gusto worthy to succeed theirs and a philosophy well set out in his own introduction. “Literature”, he writes, “says most things itself, when it is allowed to.” Criticism like this expands that allowance and adds to its pleasure’ John Bayley, Observer ‘His outstanding talent is as a cicerone, guiding the ignorant traveller with patience, knowledge and wit round some favourite literary edifice and communicating his own admiration of it to the goggling and fascinated visitor . . . the lasting impression is of our critic’s truly amazing breadth of reference’ Times Literary Supplement ‘Mr James is hungry for – and not unworthy of – engagement with important issues. A collection of dignity and coherence . . . tellingly timely’ Sunday Times

Book excerpt: Many people are aware that 1980 was an important moment in U.S. history: at a time of economic stagnation at home and international defeat abroad, it represented a turning point in bringing Ronald Reagan to the presidency and inaugurating a conservative era in American politics. What's less well known is how the popular culture of 1980 also marked a pivotal transition. By boring in with granular detail on a few key touchstone areas--politics, music, film, television, and publishing--1980 describes a zeitgeist as it shifts, capturing those elements that harkened back toward the seventies as they jostled with others that pointed forward to the eighties. The effect is analogous to capturing in slow motion the mysterious but unmistakable process by which a child grows. The result is a lively, revealing, and informative account not just of a single year and the social milieu of an era, but also a book that traces some of the most profound rhythms of American history more generally. From who shot J.R. to The Dukes of Hazzard; from John and Yoko to the end of disco and the rise of rap; from Heaven's Gate to Private Benjamin; and from Jimmy Carter's defeat to the rise of Ronald Reagan, Jim Cullen shows how 1980 can be seen as a pivot point in American culture--a time of change that ushered in the current era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1936, as television networks CBS, DuMont, and NBC experimented with new ways to provide entertainment, NBC deviated from the traditional method of single experimental programs to broadcast the first multi-part program, Love Nest, over a three-episode arc. This would come to be known as a miniseries. Although the term was not coined until 1954, several other such miniseries were broadcast, including Jack and the Beanstalk and Women in Wartime. In the mid-1960s the concept was developed into a genre that still exists. While the major broadcast networks pioneered the idea, it quickly became popular with cable and streaming services. This encyclopedic source contains a detailed history of 878 TV miniseries broadcast from 1936 to 2020, complete with casts, networks, credits, episode count and detailed plot information.
