Book The Last Hunter Collected Edition

Download or read The Last Hunter Collected Edition PDF, written by Jeremy Robinson and published by Breakneck Media. This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collected edition of The Antarktos Saga includes all five books in the series—DESCENT, PURSUIT, ASCENT, LAMENT and ONSLAUGHT, as well as never-before-seen art and character designs inspired by the series, an exclusive short story titled “The Children of Antarktos” and an interview with bestselling author Jeremy Robinson, composed primarily of questions asked by fans of the series. Description: I’ve been told that the entire continent of Antarctica groaned at the moment of my birth. The howl tore across glaciers, over mountains and deep into the ice. Everyone says so. Except for my father; all he heard was Mother's sobs. Not of pain, but of joy, so he says. Other than that, the only verifiable fact about the day I was born is that an iceberg the size of Los Angeles broke free from the ice shelf, a few miles off the coast. Again, some would have me believe the fracture took place as I entered the world. But all that really matters, according to my parents, is that I, Solomon Ull Vincent, the first child born on Antarctica—the first and only Antarctican—was born on September 2nd, 1974. If only someone could have warned me that upon my return to the continent of my birth, thirteen years later, I would be kidnapped, subjected to tortures beyond comprehension and forced to fight…and kill. If only someone had hinted that I'd wind up struggling to survive in a subterranean world full of ancient warriors, strange creatures and supernatural powers. Had I been warned, I might have lived a normal life. The human race might have remained safe. And the fate of the world might not rest on my shoulders. Had I been warned… This is my story—the tale of Solomon Ull Vincent—The Last Hunter.

Book excerpt: Freeman is a genius with an uncommon mixture of memory, intelligence and creativity. He lives in a worldwide utopia, but it was not always so. There was a time known as the Grind—when Freeman's people lived as slaves to another race referred to simply as "Master." They were property. But a civil rights movement emerged. Change seemed near, but the Masters refused to bend. Instead, they declared war. And lost. Now, the freed world is threatened by a virus, spread through bites, sweeping through the population. Those infected are propelled to violence, driven to disperse the virus. Uniquely suited to respond to this new threat, Freeman searches for a cure, but instead finds the source—the Masters, intent on reclaiming the world. Freeman must fight for his life, for his friends and for the truth, which is far more complex and dangerous than he ever imagined. Robinson's lightning fast, cutting-edge novels have won over thriller, horror, science-fiction and action/adventure fans alike, and he has received high praise from peers like James Rollins, Jonathan Maberry, and Scott Sigler. XOM-B is a wildly inventive zombie novel with a high-tech twist that will keep readers guessing until the very last sentence.

Book excerpt: With the publication of 'Darwin on Trial' in 1991, Cal Berkeley legal scholar Phillip Johnson became the leading figure in the intelligent design movement. Exposing and calling into question the philosophical foundations of Darwinism, Johnson led the charge against this largely unquestioned philosophy of materialistic reductionism and its purported basis in scientific research. This book reviews and celebrates the life and thought of Phillip Johnson and the movement for which he has served as chief architect. Editors William A. Dembski and Jed C. Macosko present eighteen essays by those who have known and worked with Phil for more than a decade. They provide personal and in-depth insight into the man, his convictions and his leadership of the intellectual movement that called into question the hegemony of Darwinian theory.

Book excerpt: In Space to Stay, the third book in the spell–binding The Saga of Rocket Science series, gives a thorough exposé of the U.S. Apollo and Space Shuttle programs. You will be there as Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee perish and get incinerated inside their locked Apollo 1 capsule; when Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise didn’t know if they would make it back alive aboard a freezing lunar module on Apollo 13; as Neil and Buzz experienced the euphoria of being the first humans to land on the Moon, while Mike Collins in lunar orbit and an anxious world looked on. You’ll see the same panoramic vistas of the lunar landscape and the beautiful blue marble we call Earth as the astronauts saw. You are taken inside the Challenger Space Shuttle as it caught fire and disintegrated in flight. What seven brave astronauts felt like as they plunged to their deaths in a basically intact crew cockpit. You’ll understand exactly what failed and how it failed on both the Challenger and the ill–fated Columbia space shuttles, and why another seven astronauts aboard the Columbia felt no pain despite their grisly annihilation during reentry.

Book Gendering Time in Augustan Love Elegy

Download or read Gendering Time in Augustan Love Elegy PDF, written by Hunter H. Gardner and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-01-31 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gendering Time in Augustan Love Elegy examines how and why time appears to affect men and women differently in Latin love elegy. Considering the genre's brief flowering during the Augustan Principate, it aims to situate the elegies of Propertius, Tibullus, and Ovid in their social and political milieu. The volume argues that the imperatives of the new regime, which encouraged a younger generation of loyalists to participate in the machinery of government, placed temporal pressures on the elite male that shaped the amator's (poet-lover's) resistance to enter a course of civil service and prompted his withdrawal into the arms of a courtesan, and therefore unmarriageable, beloved. In the second part of the volume Gardner focuses on the divergent temporal experiences of the amator and his beloved courtesan-puella (girl) through the lens of 'women's time' (le temps des femmes) and the chora, as theorized by psycholinguist Julia Kristeva. Kristeva's model of feminine subjectivity, defined by repetition, cyclicality, and eternity, allows us to understand how the beloved's marginalization from the realm of historical time proves advantageous to her amator, wishing to defer his entrance into civic life. The antithesis between the properties of 'women's time' and the linear momentum that defines masculine subjectivity, moreover, demonstrates how 'women's time' ultimately thwarts the amator's often promised generic evolution.

Book Energy at the End of the World

Download or read Energy at the End of the World PDF, written by Laura Watts and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making local energy futures, from marine energy to hydrogen fuel, at the edge of the world. The islands of Orkney, off the northern coast of Scotland, are closer to the Arctic Circle than to London. Surrounded by fierce seas and shrouded by clouds and mist, the islands seem to mark the edge of the known world. And yet they are a center for energy technology innovation, from marine energy to hydrogen fuel networks, attracting the interest of venture capitalists and local communities. In this book, Laura Watts tells a story of making energy futures at the edge of the world. Orkney, Watts tells us, has been making technology for six thousand years, from arrowheads and stone circles to wave and tide energy prototypes. Artifacts and traces of all the ages—Stone, Bronze, Iron, Viking, Silicon—are visible everywhere. The islanders turned to energy innovation when forced to contend with an energy infrastructure they had outgrown. Today, Orkney is home to the European Marine Energy Centre, established in 2003. There are about forty open-sea marine energy test facilities in the world, many of which draw on Orkney expertise. The islands generate more renewable energy than they use, are growing hydrogen fuel and electric car networks, and have hundreds of locally owned micro wind turbines and a decade-old smart grid. Mixing storytelling and ethnography, empiricism and lyricism, Watts tells an Orkney energy saga—an account of how the islands are creating their own low-carbon future in the face of the seemingly impossible. The Orkney Islands, Watts shows, are playing a long game, making energy futures for another six thousand years.

Download or read Transmediations PDF, written by Niklas Salmose and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-10 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection offers a multi-faceted exploration of transmediations, the processes of transfer and transformation that occur when communicative acts in one medium are mediated again through another. While previous research has explored these processes from a broader perspective, Salmose and Elleström argue that a better understanding is needed of the extent to which the outcomes of communicative acts are modified when transferred across multimodal media toward fostering a better understanding of our knowledge of communication more generally. Building on this imperative as a point of departure, the book details a variety of transmediations, viewed through three different lenses. The first part of the volume looks at narrative transmediations, building on existing work done by Marie-Laure Ryan on transmedia storytelling. The second section focuses less on narratological instances and more on the spatial dynamics of transmediation and the role of embodiment in the process. The final third of the book explores the challenges of transmediating scientific data into narrative format in the context of environmental issues. Taken together, these sections highlight a range of case studies of transmediations and in turn, the complexity and variety of the process, informed by the different methodologies of the different disciplines to which these transmediations belong. This innovative volume will be of particular interest to students and scholars in multimodality, communication, intermediality, semiotics, and adaptation studies.

Book excerpt: From an acclaimed historian comes an authoritative and balanced biography of FDR, based on previously untapped sources No president looms larger in twentieth-century American history than Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and few life stories can match his for sheer drama. Following in the footsteps of his Republican cousin President Theodore Roosevelt, FDR devoted himself to politics as a Democrat and a true man of the people. Eventually setting his sights on the presidency, he was elected to office in 1932 by a nation that was mired in the Great Depression and desperate for revival. As the distinguished historian Alonzo Hamby argues in this authoritative biography, FDR's record as president was more mixed than we are often led to believe. The New Deal provided much-needed assistance to millions of Americans, but failed to restore prosperity, and while FDR became an outstanding commander-in-chief during World War II, his plans for the postwar world were seriously flawed. No less perceptive is Hamby's account of FDR's private life, which explores the dynamics of his marriage and his romance with his wife's secretary, Lucy Mercer. Hamby documents FDR's final months in intimate detail, claiming that his perseverance, despite his serious illness, not only shaped his presidency, but must be counted as one of the twentieth century's great feats of endurance. Hamby reveals a man whose personality -- egocentric, undisciplined in his personal appetites, at times a callous user of aides and associates, yet philanthropic and caring for his nation's underdogs-shaped his immense legacy. Man of Destiny is a measured account of the life, both personal and public, of the most important American leader of the twentieth century.
