Download or read The Summer of Shadow PDF, written by Pat Payne and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Summer of Shadow by Pat Payne Trafford Publishing reviewed by Caroline Blaha-Black THE US REVIEW OF BOOKS "That evening Shadow was not inclined to fly to the roof to seek a roost due to his drooping or re-sprained wing, so we resurrected his intermediate cage and placed it on the ledge of the front bedroom bay window where he spent the night in safety." Shadow, a fledgling crow, was rescued and rehabilitated by the author and released back into the wild. Payne shares the crow's journey, highlighting Shadow's many trials and tribulationsbeing rescued, learning to fly, meeting other crows, and finally making full transition back into the wilderness. The author discovered the injured young crow on the forest floor, and he took him home to rehabilitate him, along with his wife, Dot. Payne describes with much delight the few months that he spent with the bird and the many habits and behaviors that the crow developed while with his human family. Crows are known for their intelligence and the ability to figure things out, which is highlighted in this book: Shadow stashing food, communicating with Payne to make his presence known, pestering the family dog with a stick, or bringing other crows over for a visit, there is no shortage of clever things that Shadow entertains the reader with. Also interesting to note are the first days of flight and meeting other crows around the author's home atop a Missouri Ozark ridge. Especially touching is Shadow's interaction with the author and his subsequent visits to the author's home upon his complete return to the wild. Colored photographs of Shadow, the people who raised him, and Murphy, the family dog, are scattered throughout the book, making it a visual treat for the reader. This is a great read for the lovers of crows and ravens, wildlife rehabilitators, and anyone with the interest in learning more about birds in general.

Download or read Summer in the Shadow of Byron PDF, written by Andrew McConnell Stott and published by Canongate Books. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1816, Lord Byron was the greatest poet of his generation and the most famous man in Britain, but his personal life was about to erupt. Fleeing his celebrity, notoriety and debts, he sought refuge in Europe, taking his young doctor with him. As an inexperienced medic with literary aspirations of his own, Dr Polidori could not believe his luck. That summer another literary star also arrived in Geneva. With Percy Bysshe Shelley came his lover, Mary and her step-sister Claire Clairmont. For the next three months, this party of young bohemians shared their lives, charged with sexual and artistic tensions. It was a period of extraordinary creativity from which would emerge Frankenstein, the gothic masterpiece of Romantic fiction, Byron's Childe Harold, Shelley's Mont Blanc, and The Vampyre by John Polidori, the first great vampire novel. It was also a time of remarkable drama and emotional turmoil. For Byron and the Shelleys, their stay by the lake would serve to immortalise them in the annals of literary history. But for Claire and Polidori, the Swiss sojourn would scar them forever.

Download or read Valley of the Shadows Surrender PDF, written by Rochelle L. Holt and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004-09-14 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Valley of the Shadows is a duet of two novels, concerning the fickleness of pursuing fame in a society that measures success by media adoration. In the title novel, Marya Brooks, an experienced poet in her seventies, decides to practice amateur obeah (voodoo) to cast negative spells on her favorite top five poets, the thriving competition. Only when each poet begins to die mysteriously does she develop guilt for her actions. Her former student, H.D., believes her research can dispute Marya's fallacious theories. Surrender, the second poem-novel, alternates between viewpoints of Rory Pole, an aspiring songwriter, and her idol, country music rising star, Maggie Moore. Also set in the southeast, primarily on both coasts of southern Florida, Rory is bitter when she receives no response from Maggie but notices that lines of her poems begin appearing in the singer's songs. In both novels, all characters eventually give up illusions and false patterns of behavior in these chilling stories, regarding the relevance of mass recognition and inordinate acclaim and adulation. They are novels-of-the-future, in accord with Anais Nin's tenets that commingle art with moral issues for compelling psychological literature.

Book excerpt: Set in a landscape resembling the awesome Peak District, the wildcats reflect the tough beauty of the scenery. We soon meet Kahmet, the unlikely hero. It is said that God has no favourites: if He had, then who would qualify, since His standards must be immeasurably high? However, in Kahmet we might consider the possibility. Flawed as he is, his tentative trust in divine protection at his time of greatest need, his youthful wisdom as he tests his growing maturity, and his respect for those whose position warrants it, all point to deserved benevolent protection by an Ultimate Authority. The invading tribe of wildcats display moments of horrific cruelty; the wily ways on both sides would tax the battle plans of any human army: the reader’s hope is always that good will indeed conquer evil. As each cat has the opportunity to take centre stage, we see the world from their point of view, whether in battle-crazed fury, or the sweetest tenderness of helpless love. At the climax of the story, all threads are pulled together and the reader has a glimpse of the Eternal, whereby the imperfect is completed, inequalities justified, and inadequacies resolved.
