Book Emigration from the United Kingdom to North America 1763 1912

Download or read Emigration from the United Kingdom to North America 1763 1912 PDF, written by S.C Johnson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1913, this valuable and scholarly work is an account of the flow of population from the British Isles to the United States and Canada during the nineteenth century and the author’s extensive researches into government reports and papers has brought together a great deal of material which gives his book an important place as an authority on British emigration. The work begins with a short historical survey in which the author discusses the causes of emigration before treating the subject topically as a series of political and economic problems. He gives a detailed account of the transport and reception of emigrants, of emigration restrictions and colonisation schemes, and of the emigration of women and children, and presents with much force the conflict of interests that grew up between England and her colonies respecting migration. This must still be regarded as an authoritative work on the subject and its bibliography will be of great value to all students of the period.

Book The Global Lives of German Migrants

Download or read The Global Lives of German Migrants PDF, written by Marcel Erlinghagen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the German case, this open access book highlights the increasing flows of migration and the internationalisation of individual life courses. It analyses the experiences of migration across four central domains - employment and income, partners and families, health and wellbeing, as well as friends and social participation - which potentially have far-reaching consequences for social inequalities and life chances. The book showcases results from an innovative probability sample that is representative of German emigrants who recently moved abroad and remigrants who recently returned from abroad and compares their international experiences with the sedentary population in Germany. Stays abroad, whether temporary or permanently, have become the new normal for increasing numbers of people from highly developed welfare states. Unnoticed from mainstream migration studies, these countries are today not only major immigration countries but also important sources of international mobility. By providing an empirically founded prism of the global lives of German migrants, this book is a valuable resource for students and researchers of migration, social inequality, and the life course and provides practitioners with insights into these regularly overlooked aspects of international migration.

Book Immigrants in the Lands of Promise

Download or read Immigrants in the Lands of Promise PDF, written by Samuel L. Baily and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most studies of immigration to the New World have focused on the United States. Samuel L. Baily's eagerly awaited book broadens that perspective through a comparative analysis of Italian immigrants to Buenos Aires and New York City before World War I. It is one of the few works to trace Italians from their villages of origin to different destinations abroad. Baily examines the adjustment of Italians in the two cities, comparing such factors as employment opportunities, skill levels, pace of migration, degree of prejudice, and development of the Italian community. Of the two destinations, Buenos Aires offered Italians more extensive opportunities, and those who elected to move there tended to have the appropriate education or training to succeed. These immigrants, who adjusted more rapidly than their North American counterparts, adopted a long-term strategy of investing savings in their New World home. In New York, in contrast, the immigrants found fewer skilled and white-collar jobs, more competition from previous immigrant groups, greater discrimination, and a less supportive Italian enclave. As a result, rather than put down roots, many sought to earn money as rapidly as possible and send their earnings back to family in Italy. Baily views the migration process as a global phenomenon. Building on his richly documented case studies, the author briefly examines Italian communities in San Francisco, Toronto, and Sao Paulo. He establishes a continuum of immigrant adjustment in urban settings, creating a landmark study in both immigration and comparative history.
