Book excerpt: A novel set during the reign of Genghis Khan and his Mongol Empire from the acclaimed author of Ghost on the Steppe, “a master storyteller” (Houston Chronicle). Cecelia Holland’s historical fiction is well known for its immersion in exotic cultures, and Until the Sun Falls, one of her most successful books, takes the reader into the heart of the Mongol horde during the conquest of Russia and eastern Europe in the thirteenth century. Genghis Khan had told his people they were destined to rule the world, and by his death they had made an impressive start. His four sons followed him to the leadership of the enormous new empire and continued the expansion. His eldest son, Batu, launched the conquest of the West—Russia and Europe. In a few years of devastating warfare, the Mongols reached as far as Vienna, mowing down every army that dared face them, like an irresistible force of nature. Until the Sun Falls stars a Mongol general, Psin, whose battles against the enemies of the Kha Khan sometimes seem easier than his struggles with his wives and his son. Wise, brave, and bloody-minded, Psin embodies the passions and dreams of the greatest conquerors the world has ever seen, at the height of their power.

Book excerpt: Leah Buchanan's family has been in service to vampires for five centuries. Even so, Leah wants nothing to do with her family's legacy. But when she's summoned to her Selection by the Vampire Dominion, under familial pressure, she has no choice but to go. Lucien has been living under the strict edicts of the Vampire Dominion for centuries but he's tired of these ancient laws stripping away everything that is the essence of the vampire. So he's taking it back. This is because Lucien has been watching and waiting for decades for Leah to become available for a Selection and he will not be limited with what he can do with her. He will have her, all of her. Therefore, Lucien is going to tame Leah, even if he gets hunted and killed for doing it. What neither Leah nor Lucien expects is the strong bond that will form between them, connecting them on unprecedented levels for mortals or immortals. And what will grow between them means they will challenge their ways of life and their union will begin the Prophesies which makes them one of three couples who will save humanity...or die in the effort.

Book excerpt: The departure point of the Islamic religion, the central article of faith from which all else flows, may be stated as follows: God (the only God there is: al-Ilāh, Allah in Arabic; El, Elohim, Jahweh in Hebrew; Khudā or Yazdān in Persian,Tanri in Turkish, ὁ Θεός in Greek, Deus in Latin, God in plain English) has spoken to man in the Qur’ān. This divine communication is seen as the final stage in a long series of divine communications conducted through the prophets. It began with Adam, the first man, who was also the first prophet, because he was the first to whom God revealed Himself. After Adam, God continued to address men through prophets, to warn them that their happiness lay in worshiping Him and submitting themselves to Him, and to tell them of the terrible consequences of disobedience. In each case, however, the message was changed and deformed by perverse men. Finally, in His mercy, God sent down His final revelation through the seal of His prophets, Muhammad, in a definitive form which would not be lost. The Qur’ān, then, is the Word of God, for Muslims. While controversies have raged among them as to the sense in which this is true--whether it is the created or uncreated Word, whether it is true of every Arabic letter or only of the message as a whole, that it is true has never been questioned by them. The Qur’ān was revealed in Arabic. It is a matter of faith in Islam that since it is of Divine origin it is inimitable, and since to translate is always to betray, Muslims have always deprecated and at times prohibited any attempt to render it in another language. Anyone who has read it in the original is forced to admit that this caution seems justified; no translation, however faithful to the meaning, has ever been fully successful. Arabic when expertly used is a remarkably terse, rich and forceful language, and the Arabic of the Qur’ān is by turns striking, soaring, vivid, terrible, tender and breathtaking. As Professor Gibb has put it, "No man in fifteen hundred years has ever played on that deeptoned instrument with such power, such boldness, and such range of emotional effect."1 It is meaningless to apply adjectives such as "beautiful" or "persuasive" to the Qur’ān; its flashing images and inexorable measures go directly to the brain and intoxicate it. It is not surprising, then, that a skilled reciter of the Qur’ān can reduce an Arabic-speaking audience to helpless tears, that for thirteen centuries it has been ceaselessly meditated upon, or that for great portions of the human race, the "High-speech" of seventh-century Arabia has become the true accents of the Eternal. The selections which follow here have been taken from Professor Arberry's translation, the only one in English which has succeeded in suggesting the extraordinary qualities of the original.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Down through the ages, people have been fascinated by horror stories! There had always been mystical stories of the spilling of blood, like blood sacrifices to the gods for a good harvest or the consumption of blood from a warrior to gain the dead warriors strength. Look no further than our own Bible. Look at Cain and Abel, the Aztec, Toltec, Inca, and many of the Central and South American tribes. A person walking past a narrow alley in the daytime will give it a quick glance and think nothing of it. But add the darkness of a late night or a sudden wind or a sudden noise or a shadow upon the wall and have that same person walk past that same alley, and he will conjure up within his mind all kinds of things hiding in that alley. Many people are fascinated by eternal life and staying young forever. As an example, look at the money we spend on makeup to camouflage our age. A vampire can accomplish staying young forever by drinking the blood of the living. It is the ancient ritual of consuming the blood of the living to extend ones life or to absorb virility, strength, and youth of the one that was killed. There are stories that have been handed down through the ages about the existence of vampires in the Far East, like China and Japan, all over Europe, but mostly in Eastern Europe, particularly in Romania and Bulgaria.

Book excerpt: A leather jacket rests by Lake Michigan like a black colt sits, a lump in the grass, waiting for a mare that never returns. Nicole Zehner is a young poet who has already learned that small observations and different experiences can often lead to big conclusions and the same understanding. In her first compilation of poetry divided into five parts, Nicole shares reflections that invite others to step into creative lyrical stories that ponder the connections between the cosmic and commonplace as well as the complex emotions resulting from change. Through poems that reflect on diverse topics and themes like a dark winter’s night, Catholic school, the pursuit of beauty, and an eclipse during the month of the sun, Nicole invites others to enter a world that brilliantly intertwines the everyday with the grandness of the universe. The Last Day of April shares a poignant volume of poems as a young woman contemplates life, love, and the world around her.
